Luna Horns are back in Oslo after a short trip to the Kongsberg Jazz Festival this summer. On 8th September they will be playing at Cafeteateret/Nordic Black Theatre in Oslo, teaming up with the Gambian guitar virtuoso Sangkung Jobarteh for a one off collaboration that promises solid grooves, jazz madness and dub/electronica vibes. Together with Sankung they will be putting new interpretations on the songs from their debut album Afro Space Hotel, as well as playing new material.
Luna Horns debut album, Afro space Hotel, was released last autumn garnering good reviews and getting radio play in both Norway and abroad, with several of their songs being played on rotation at the respected Norwegian radio channel NRK Jazz. Sankung Jobarteh is a well known figure on both the Norwegian and international music scene. Originally from Gambia, he grew up immersed in the west African Griot tradition and since the 1980s he has been a leading performer and promoter of the modern Afro-Manding style. He’s been called Gambia’s best guitarist.
So here’s what to expect according to Don Ball, who wrote the following when reviewing Afro Space Hotel for All About Jazz: Listening to Luna Horns' Afro Space Hotel is like stepping into your neighborhood pub and being overwhelmed by the band playing there, with horns blazing like the Jamaica band The Skatalites and a bassist of the Bootsy Collins variety. When you put this together with Sankung Jobarteh’s dazzling guitar skills, the result is an exciting musical evening of danceable rhythms, funky horns and electrifying guitar solos.
Luna Horns are Tim Lowerson- soprano saxophone, Ulf Denneche - trombone, Morten Møller - flute/alt sax, Ewan Jaouen - Barri sax, Torbjørn Syversen - drums, Gard Langerud - bass.
And the icing on the cake are the support band ^the [A-Z][a-z]*$ (none us are quite sure how to pronounce it). Their music is an exploration of postrock, dub and electronica. Played by three talented musicians from Bodø, they bring a Northern Norwegian sang-froid to cool grooves and biting samples.
^the [A-Z][a-z]*$ are Are Grøttum - guitar, Kai Morten Berg - drums, Erlend Albertsen - bass.
If all this doesn’t entice you to come down to Cafeteateret / Nordic Black Theatre on the 8th September, you might need to reassess your priorities in life!
